Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains what information Kura ("Kura," "we," "us") collects when you use our website and app (together, the "Service"), how we use it, and the choices you have. Kura is built to need as little of your information as possible.
1. Who operates Kura
Kura is owned and operated by Parlad Dhungana ("Kura," "we," "us," or "our"). We do not publish a separate mailing address for Kura; if you have questions about who is responsible for your information, or how to reach us, write to admin@nepalikura.app (see also Section 17, Contact).
2. Information we collect
Account information — when you sign in, Kura uses Google Sign-In or Sign in with Apple to verify your identity and create your account. From Google, we receive your name, email address, and a unique Google account ID. From Apple, we receive your name (if you choose to share it), an email address (either your real address or an Apple-generated private relay address, depending on your choice), and a unique Apple user ID. We use this information to sync your notes, favourite stations, and settings across your devices, and we never see or store your Google or Apple password.
Content you provide — notes you write, and any posts, photos, captions, or other content you share to the community map. See Section 5 (Community posts and other content you share) for how this content is shown to other users.
Usage and device information — basic technical details such as device type, operating system, app version, crash logs, and general usage patterns, which help us fix bugs and improve Kura.
Information from advertising and analytics partners — Kura's free tier shows ads (Kura Pro removes them). Our advertising and analytics partners may collect information such as device identifiers and general usage data to help us understand how the app is used and to show ads relevant to you.
3. Location information
Depending on the permission you grant, Kura may collect either your approximate location (for example, network- or IP-based) or your precise GPS location, or both. Approximate location is used to show generally relevant information, such as currency context relevant to your region and posts near you on the community map. Precise location, where you grant that specific permission, is used for more accurate panchang and sunrise/sunset times for exactly where you are, and to let you pin your exact location when you choose to add a post to the community map.
Most of the time, Kura only requests and collects your location while you are actively using the app in the foreground — for example, to show the panchang and sunrise/sunset times for where you are right now. For a small number of features, Kura may also request permission to access your location while the app is running in the background, so we can let you know about something relevant even when you're not actively looking at the app. Where we do use background location, it is tied to that specific feature, governed by its own separate permission on your device, and is not used to continuously track or build a detailed history of your movements.
Sharing your location is always your choice: you can allow, deny, or change this permission at any time in your device settings. If you don't share your location, Kura falls back to a default or manually chosen location so the calendar and other features still work, just without automatic local accuracy.
4. Cookies and similar technologies
On our website (nepalikura.app), we use a small amount of local browser storage — not traditional third-party tracking cookies — to remember simple preferences, such as your chosen language (English or Nepali), so you don't have to reselect it on every visit. We do not use this storage to track you across other websites.
The calendar on our home page also saves the months you open in your browser's local storage for up to 24 hours, so returning to them is instant and doesn't need to download the same data again, and sets one small first-party cookie (kura_cal) that remembers the day you selected until the end of that day. Neither contains personal information, and both can be cleared at any time from your browser settings.
Kura's advertising and analytics partners (see Section 8, Third-party services we rely on) may use cookies, SDK identifiers, or similar technologies within the app or on our website to understand usage and to show ads on the free tier. You can control cookies through your browser settings, and control app-level tracking — such as the prompt shown under Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework — through your device settings. Subscribing to Kura Pro removes ads, though analytics used to operate and improve the Service may still apply.
5. Community posts and other content you share
If you post to Kura's community map, please understand that some of what you share is public to other Kura users:
- Your post's photo, caption, and your username are visible to other users who view the community map — this is how the feature works.
- The location you attach to a post is also shown to other users, generally as a pin at or near the location you chose, so others can see where your post relates to.
- Please do not include private or sensitive personal information in a public post — including phone numbers, home addresses, government ID numbers, financial details, or anyone else's personal information without their consent. Once posted, this content is visible to anyone using the community map feature.
6. How we use your information
We use the information above to:
- Provide, maintain, and sync core features — the calendar, panchang, notes, radio favourites, and community map;
- Show you relevant ads, feed content, and news, and understand how the Service is used and performs;
- Respond to your support and privacy requests and otherwise communicate with you about the Service;
- Detect, investigate, and prevent fraud, abuse, and violations of our Terms of Service; and
- Improve Kura and build new features.
7. We do not sell your data
Kura does not sell your personal information to data brokers or unrelated third parties, and we never will. Where we work with service providers — such as Google or Apple for sign-in, or analytics and advertising partners to keep Kura free and to show relevant content and ads — we share only what those providers need to do their job, under their own privacy and security obligations. That is not a sale of your data.
8. Third-party services we rely on
Kura uses a small number of third parties to operate:
- Google Sign-In and Sign in with Apple, for authentication;
- Cloud hosting and database providers, to store your account, notes, and community content securely;
- Independently operated radio stations, whose live streams Kura plays directly from their own public broadcast URLs;
- An email delivery provider, to deliver messages you send us through our website's contact form; and
- Analytics and advertising partners, used to show ads on the free tier.
9. Data retention and deletion
We keep your account information and content for as long as your account is active, so your notes and preferences are there when you need them. If you delete your Kura account, we delete your account information and everything tied to it — including your personal notes, favourite stations, and community posts — from our active systems, generally within 30 days. We may keep limited records for longer where required for legal, security, or fraud-prevention purposes, or where data has already been anonymized so it no longer identifies you. To request deletion, write to admin@nepalikura.app; see Section 12 (Verifying your identity) for how we confirm this kind of request.
10. Children's privacy
Kura is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us at admin@nepalikura.app and we will delete it.
11. Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights regarding your personal information. You can act on many of these directly in the app — for example, editing or deleting a note, or deleting a community post you shared — or by writing to admin@nepalikura.app:
- Right of access — ask us to confirm what personal information we hold about you, and request a copy of it.
- Right to delete / erasure — ask us to delete your personal information, subject to the limited exceptions described in Section 9 (Data retention and deletion).
- Right to correct / rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete personal information.
- Right to download / export — ask us for a copy of your information in a portable, commonly used format.
- Right to object — object to certain uses of your personal information, such as for advertising or analytics purposes, and ask us to restrict that use.
12. Verifying your identity
To protect your account and your information, we may need to verify your identity before completing certain requests — such as a request to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information. We will ask only for what's reasonably necessary to confirm you are the account holder, such as confirming you can sign in to the Google or Apple account linked to your Kura account, or verifying the email address we have on file. If we're unable to verify your identity, we may decline to act on the request, or limit what we're able to provide, in order to protect your account from unauthorized access.
13. Data security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures to protect your information. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If we become aware of a breach affecting your personal information, we will notify you and relevant authorities as required by law.
14. International data transfers
Kura's servers and service providers may be located in — and your information may be processed in — the United States, Nepal, and Canada, as well as other countries where our service providers operate. Privacy laws in these countries may differ from, and may offer different protections than, the laws of the country where you live. By using Kura, you understand that your information may be transferred to and processed in these locations, consistent with this Privacy Policy.
15. Content moderation and enforcement
Kura reserves the right, at our discretion, to review, remove, or restrict access to any post, photo, comment, or other content that we believe violates our Terms of Service or this Policy, is unlawful, or is otherwise inappropriate — with or without notice to the person who posted it. See our Terms of Service, Section 6 (Acceptable use) and Section 7 (Reporting content or accounts), for the rules that apply to content you post and how to report content that concerns you.
If anyone attempts to steal, misuse, unlawfully access, or breach Kura's systems, our users' data, or our intellectual property, Kura reserves the right to investigate and pursue every legal remedy available — including civil claims, injunctive relief, and referral to law enforcement or regulators — in addition to any technical or account-level steps we take to stop the activity.
16. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or for other reasons. When we do, we'll update the "Last updated" date below. If a change is material, we will make reasonable efforts to let you know before it takes effect — for example, through an in-app notice, a notice on this page, or a message to the email address on file, depending on the significance of the change. We encourage you to review this page from time to time. Your continued use of Kura after a material change takes effect constitutes your acceptance of the revised Policy; if you do not agree with a change, you should stop using Kura and, if you wish, request deletion of your account as described in Section 9 (Data retention and deletion).
